Adoption

Definition of Adoption:

Adoption is the legal process by which a person or a couple becomes the legal parent(s) of a child who is not biologically their own.  In order to adopt a child, a person or couple must first obtain the consent of the child’s biological parent(s) or have their parental rights terminated by the court.  The adoption process can be lengthy and complicated, involving home studies, background checks, and court appearances.  However, once the adoption is finalized, the adoptive parent(s) assume all legal rights and responsibilities as if the child were biologically their own.

Process:

Adoption involves a court process where the biological parents of the child terminate their parental rights (or the court orders a termination) and transfers them to the adoptive parents. Once the adoption is final, the adoptive parents become the legal parents of the child, and the child’s legal ties to their biological parents are severed.
